Go to Silverstone with Sky

Sky and Buy.at are giving all affiliates an opportunity to go on a full VIP trip to Silverstone for the grand prix on othe 6th of July. They have 5 opportunities to win, with spaces awarded for everything from top affiliate to best website.

This looks set to be a great event not only for the petrol heads, but also anyone that loves a big occasion.

There is a list below of everything you get on the day.

  • Circuit and hospitality admission
  • VIP wallet containing itinerary
  • Centre transfer
  • Reserved grandstand seating
  • Balcony/ terrace viewing
  • Carparking
  • Chefs Table (breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea)
  • Post race afternoon tea
  • Champagne served all day
  • Full bar
  • Televisions/ Replays/ Interviews
  • Souvenir programme per person
  • Admission to Copse Restaurant & Marquee
  • Hosts/ Hostesses/ Security

I have been lucky enough to have been to Sky hospitality before and I can tell you they know how to have a good time. I think affiliate competitions are a great incentive to take on a program and push it harder, especially when it is a money can’t buy prize like this one.

3 Business Lessons Learnt in Strip Clubs!

(not that i go to this sort of establishment obviously)

I was chatting to some mates this weekend about strip clubs and the things they do to take advantage of their drunk and horny customers.

In this line of work you tend to end up in lappys quite a bit. The industry is made up, in its bulk, by men, I know there are some very good ladies working in the industry, but the fact is, there are more men, meaning that social gatherings end up in these establishments some times.

I am not going to get into an argument about the rights and wrongs of peelers, just highlight how strippers and managers take advantage and how blokes tend to fall for it and how we can learn from these experiances.

1: Do business for the right reasons

Lets get this straight exotic dancers are in this for the money, they are not dancing for the fun of it and they do not “really like you”. Thinking you are in love with a stripper on a drunken night out is a very quick way to spend £300 on dances then go home alone.

2: Discuss payment terms before signing a Contract

This is a popular habbit of gentlemens establishments, charging you a 20% service change for drinks and dances paid for on a card. It doesn’t cost them any more to conduct business via credit card then ASDA so why do they add 20% on the top?

3: Consider your options before signing a contract.

Business shouldnt be done in the heat of the moment, you should always weigh up the risk reward of business transactions, consider what you are getting for your money and what you will gain from this transaction. By this i am talking about “shall i keep going?”.

Anyone got any to add?

Things that Affiliate Marketing Can Learn From The FA Cup

The FA Cup

1. Small Teams Always Have a Chance
It was great to see Havant and Waterloo mucking in with the best of them at Anfield, taking the lead twice in front of the kop.

The same thing can happen in affiliate marketing, with so called small players competing with the big boys and outperforming them. The biggest example of this is PPC with affiliate competing with huge search agencies and beating them in their own backyard.

2. Form is Temporary Class is Eternal
There are only 6 teams from England’s top division left in the world’s oldest knockout football tournament. With both Derby and Man City crashing out to lower league sides in the 4th round. If football has taught us anything over the years is that form is temporary and class in eternal, all affiliates, all companies for that matter, go through bad patches and hit obstacles.

The most notable obstacle over the last 2 years has been the Google Quality Score, and before that the removal of multiple listings in Google. The point is “Class” affiliates will overcome these obstacles and excel

3. “It’s a Funny Old Game”
Football is famously a “funny old game” with things not working as you think they should do. Affiliate marketing is the same, there are affiliates with next to no technical knowledge doing very well and concepts that you would expect to die, flourishing under the idiosyncrasies of Affiliate Marketing.

4. Silly Mistakes Cost Matches
Spurs lost on Saturday to a below par Manchester United after a few dodgy moments and decisions. This can happen in Affiliate Marketing, if you don’t think things through you can end up making a bad choice and costing your team a huge amount of money.

Then again sometimes you just have to hit it and hope for luck.

Guest Post: The Value of Tactical Incentives

Incentive

I would like to welcome the first guest post on this blog from Matt Brown from Hatmatic, Matt has been working in the industry for many years and has been running Hatmatic, an independent affiliate consultancy company, since leaving dgm in Dec 05.

Matt also writes a blog which he even occasionally updates.

“The Value of Tactical Incentives

Here’s an interesting one: the incentive approach. When I worked on the network side, I’d often encourage a new merchant to keep some budget aside for tactical incentives, for seasonal bonus opportunities so affiliates would feel the love and push the program that little bit harder.

Obviously the Vegas trip which Rob’s posted about is a case in point, though I think that’s one end of a wide spectrum. I have and still do work with all sorts of merchants who offer all sorts of tactical incentives, from “earn an extra 1%…” or 2 tickets to the second day at the Oval…”

I guess my interest here is what is the length of value in putting out a tactical incentive, how long does that value last? What makes an incentive exciting or valuable to affiliates? Can you build loyalty through tactical incentives or do affiliates think they are designed for a short term sales lift, and that merchants aren’t interested in building longer term loyalty through other more strategic approaches.

Be interested in any thoughts. “

Vegas Baby - Buy a Gift Competition

Vegas BabyThe winners of BuyaGift’s famous Las Vegas competition were announced this morning, with the mighty CK Net being one of them.

You can read about last years event on Paul’s Blog and I am hoping that this years will live up to the hype.

I have only been to Vegas once before when I was a student, it was great then, but should be even better this time. I will try to get Graham to time the trip around the Calzaghe Fight, though I am not sure if he will go for it.

I’d like to say a huge thanks to buy a gift for taking us, competitions like this are great for campaigns.

We only started promoting buyagift on the back of this competition, thinking we would run it at break even in exchange for a trip to Vegas, but it turned out to be a great earner.
